When Henry Dana first set port at the headlands near Mission San Juan Capistrano, his description of the area as “the only romantic spot on the coast” could not be more true then as it is today.
With a year-round temperate climate and home to luxurious resorts such as The Ritz Carlton and St. Regis, the pristine landscape of Dana Point is attractive to visitors from all corners of the globe. The surrounding counties of Los Angeles and San Diego are a leisurely commute by train and the famous Sawdust Festival in Laguna Beach can be reached by taking advantage of free shuttles offered from Salt Creek Beach all summer long.
Dohney Beach, mentioned in iconic surf rock songs by the Beach Boys and the Sufaris, is a State Park and popular surf spot for local wave riders. With a beautiful grass park lined with palm trees and barbecue areas right across from the sand, Doheney lends itself to a variety of enjoyable activities. Tandem bike rentals and a diverse snack bar are available to beach goers as well as a friendly gift shop and interpretive center for the marine enthusiast.
Town Center Dana Point is just a bicycle jaunt away from many of the festivals offered in the community. Tourists may enjoy the Whale Festival in February, Doheny Blues Festival in May, or the Tall Ships Festival in September. Catch a free concert in the park during the summer months or or climb aboard Captain Dave’s Dolphin Safari Catamaran Tour and venture a short distance out to sea from the Dana Point Harbor to witness the migration of the largest animal on earth; the blue whale.
If you have a “whale” of an appetite, choose from the fabulous varieties of restaurants on the Harbor. Jon’s Fish Market can be distinguished as the best fish and chips purveyor by the long line of Dana Point locals waiting to place an order. Of course locals also know to go to Saltwater Grill for the hottest live music and outdoor bar.
For your caffeine fix, forego Starbucks and jaunt two doors down. J.C. Beans coffee house has the best service and lattes in town.
With the relaxed atmosphere of a Southern California beach town and the comforts of resort accommodations, Dana Point is the quintessential vacation destination.
